gattaca
ermm.. we watched gattaca abt 2 weeks ago? this movie is mainly abt science and technology, the part on human genes... it is a movie that was released in 1997 and it lasts for abt 110 minutes.. the main characters consists of vincent and jerome... the show actually surrounds the theme on Human Genome Project[HGP]...
vincent was traditionally born, he had defects such as nearsightedness and congenital heart defect, and he was expected to live only for 30 years.. just with the blood of an newly born infant, the machine is able to tell anything that is medically related to the infant...wow.. means u can noe ur physical future upon ur birth.. so cool.. ahhaha.. vincent was being discriminated upon his birth.. his mother wanted to name him anton but due to his birth defects, his father felt that he wasn't fit for the name anton... so he was named vincent instead.. his parents felt that anton, younger bro, could do do everthing better than him.. vincent's dream was to become a researcher cum an astronaut.... but he knew he had poor genes which would not allow him to successfully fufill his dream...aiyo so ke lian.. how can such discrimination take place... so he left home and went to look for someone who could sort of share his genes with him.. so, he found jerome... jerome had almost a perfect set of genes... if vincent was to own jerome's genes, he would definitely be able to fufill his dream.. jerome was a swimming star, but due to an accident he met with, his crippled.. so even with his perfect genes he had, he couldn't do anything.. so he agreed to share his genes with vincent.. so, vincent went thru a plastic surgery to change his look to the same as jerome.. thus, with jerome's genes, vincent went to gattaca for an interview... vincent passed the interview just by the test of his genes.. frm then on, he was an official valid in gattaca.. wah no need for verbal interview.. so shuang de.. lolx.. frm then on vincent had to have a fake piece of skin over his finger so as to contain jerome's blood... whenever one enters gattaca, then have to have their blood sucked to be tested for identity.. as a long run, gattaca can open a blood bank le huh.. hahaha.. then there was a murder in gattaca and vincent's eyebrow was found nearby, and thus the whole gattaca's workers were investigated as they suspected that vincent was imposing as someone in gattaca.. they suspected him to be the murder.. but vincent used ways and managed to escape thru.. but he wasn't the murder.... so in the end vincent still managed to go up to space for his mission... b4 vincent went up to space, jerome showed vincent a room filled with loads of his urine and blood... the amt contained was sufficent for vincent to use for 20 more yrs or more.. and also, jerome gave vincent smth and told him to open it only when his already on the way to space.. vincent opened it when he was on the spaceship and it was a bunch of hair that belonged to jerome... and jerome killed himself in fire ... he felt that he was useless as a cripled and also he wanted to allow vincent to fully become jerome ... oh my my.. jerome was so noble..
though gattaca was released in 1997, but due to HGP, the contents in gattaca which used to be only a science fiction by then, may happen soon in the future if HGP is to continue .... gattca has shown that one is able to change his or her identity with the use of genetic information and is able not to get caught with it.. this may mean that people are able to commit crime and get off with it.. but if there is someone who can get off with change of identity then there will also be someone who will be able to have ways to catch the person who has changed his or her identity... gattaca has shown more of the bad side of the HGP but not everything in the show is true.. for example, gattaca shows that genetic engineering can change a fetus physically and psychologically, but it isn't true... genetic engineering only allows the doctor to change the sequence for the genes and thus improve on the physical points abt the fetus.. change of genetic sequence will not allow any change psychologically... the HGP has more advantages rather then then the disadvantages that it has.. HGP will allow more patients to be cured, as personalised medicine can be made to cure a patient.. then also fetus with birth defects found can also be cured even b4 it is born... the genetic sequence can be changed to prevent the fetus frm being bore ill.. this will prevent more ppl frm being discriminated ... ppl like vincent will not be discrimninated against becuz of his poor genes.. and also he will not be discriminated by his father when he is being compared to his brother anton, who has better genes then him due to his genetic sequence changed for the best as it was possible when he was still a fetus.... vincent will also then not be discriminated against to become an astronaunt due to his poor genes.. so i have to conclude that i am for the HGP.. ((: and also.... gattaca is a nice movie.. the storyline is interesting and also exciting.. due to the story is a science fiction, the content is very new and everything is so unexpected... it makes one very anxious abt wad is gonna happen next every minute.. even though the show was made like 9 yrs ago.. but the movie films a very high tech workplace and everything.. so this movie is worth watching..
